Allbau in Essen
The “Allbauhaus” is located in a very noticeable part of Essen, the European Capital of Culture 2010, right in the middle of the city. The building was completely renovated by its owners and freshened up on the exterior as well. This was done by installing sizable lighting features and a cheerful customer centre within a transparent and open display case-like façade.
Krüger took on the task of fashioning the rooms inside the “Allbauhaus”, which are visible from the exterior – without sacrificing functionality. This led to a flexible, multi-functional space that can be used for exhibitions and readings. An inviting waiting area complete with a sophisticated coffee bar was added to the centre.
Just as with the design of the exterior’s façade, a major emphasis was put on the proper use of lighting within the interior. The reception counter, designed to provide spatial separation in the customer centre, was visually integrated with a glass light wall. The wall stretches almost up to the ceiling and discreetly yet visibly displays the Allbau logo while providing a pleasant glow which can also be easily seen from the outside. Covered lighting elements reflect the architecture’s contours and provide colourful accents.
The open environment holds a total of ten desks. By using low partitions, employees are supplied with storage space and the privacy needed to concentrate while the room’s transparent and open atmosphere is preserved. The bright, striking colours also act as a common theme throughout the building and therefore provide unity without overwhelming visitors or employees with a blast of visual input.
