Opportunities for Development in Efficiently Used Space
Deloitte, Düsseldorf
Deloitte is one of the leading auditing and business consulting firms. Some 1,000 auditors, tax advisers, consultants and corporate finance consultants work out of nine different buildings near Königsallee in Düsseldorf. Many areas in the office buildings, which consist for 75 percent of individual offices, are unused. From a pure mathematical standpoint, each employee has 23.1 square meters of space.
But Deloitte was looking for a building out of which all of its Düsseldorf employees could work. The goal was to transform the entire building into one workplace. Communication, teamwork, and the ability to concentrate were the aspects that drove the basic concept.
Within three years of the initial meeting, the concept was transformed into a new building. The resulting transparent structure, which consists for 85 percent of "duo" or group offices and flowing hallways that allow for multifunctional open spaces, was conceived in the 'spherion' of architects Deilmann Koch.
Thanks to the intelligent planning of storage space, each employee has an average of eight square meters in which they can develop. For Deloitte, the efficient use of the space resulted in direct cost savings, from which the staff also benefited: The quality of the workplaces increased considerably, and with that, the efficiency of the workflow.
Wirtschaftswoche presented the architects with the "Best Office 2004" award for the well thought-out office concept. In addition, Deloitte received the femb Award for "Office of the Year 2004."
